Interested in joining the Team?

The Aberglaslyn Mountain Rescue Team is made up of volunteers from across our community and from all walks of life. Many have specialist medical, climbing or outdoor skills, but all have a willingness to train, learn and work together as a great team.

Our team members receive regular training and develop a wide range of new skills to complement those they bring to the team.
Joining a mountain rescue team involves a significant commitment. Calls are received 24/7, every day of the year. Whilst many callouts involve finding missing people and have a successful conclusion, other callouts sadly involve serious injuries and death. Some of our work involves the recovery of deceased persons. Callouts can be long and arduous in dangerous conditions, potentially also involving cooperation with external agencies and travel by helicopter. Whilst Mountain Rescue work can be extremely rewarding and lead to lifelong friendships, it must be recognised that you may be exposed to some exceptionally challenging and distressing incidents.

Essential Prerequisites

  • • At least 18 years old
  • Mountain fit - our team members need to be fit and capable on steep ground whilst carrying a heavy backpack
  • Available for training – we ask our team to attend Monday night training (7 – 9pm) and occasional weekends for additional training and fundraising events
  • Comfortable working at height and in inclement weather
  • Available for callouts (mid-week daytime availability is especially desirable)

Desirable Skills

  • Ability to Speak Welsh
  • Local knowledge including the Eryri National Park
  • Winter Mountaineering Skills
  • Competent navigation using map and compass in all weather conditions
  • Experience in basic first aid and rope work
